Greek yogurt is a versatile ingredient that can take the place of several other ingredients in your recipes for a lighter, healthier alternative.
When choosing Greek yogurt for baking and cooking, plain and unsweetened is best. Look for Greek yogurt products that have minimal additives. If you are eating yogurt on its own and prefer sweeter alternatives, you can naturally sweeten your Greek yogurt with fruit, and add seeds or nuts for some delicious crunch.
Greek Yogurt Benefits
You may be wondering how Greek yogurt is different from other types of plain yogurt. The difference is mostly in the processes. Standard yogurt is strained twice, leaving some of the liquid residues and making it thinner inconsistency.
Greek yogurt is strained 3 times. This makes it thicker while removing more of the sugar, lactose and water. As a result, it has a stronger flavour and higher acidity, which makes it easier for your body to absorb other nutrients.

Common Ingredients you can substitute

Here are a few ideas for ingredients you can substitute with Greek yogurt in recipes:
- Mayonaise
- Sour cream
- Thickened cream
Or try reducing the quantities of other ingredients. For example, instead of 1 cup of butter, use 1/2 cup of Greek yogurt and 3/4 cup of butter. These small changes all add up to big health benefits.
Sometimes I switch out the mayonnaise in this egg salad recipe for Greek yogurt for a healthier alternative and it still tastes just as good.
