We have been making Christmas crack for several years now, and it’s always the favourite treat recipe each December, alongside my rum balls. So this year, I thought why wait until Christmas to enjoy it? Let’s make an Easter version instead!

The best thing about Easter crack is that it only requires a handful of ingredients – brown sugar, butter, crackers, chocolate and some decorations to suit the season. And it can be done in around an hour. Even better!

Easter crack is a fun sweet treat for your Easter celebrations. Plus it also makes a perfect edible gift too. Just pop it in some cellophane bags, ready to gift, along with some Easter rocky road.

While this Easter crack is made with white chocolate, you can also make it using milk chocolate, dark chocolate or even a flavoured chocolate like Caramilk.

What is Easter Crack?

The name doesn’t entirely tell you what Easter egg crack is, but once you try it, you will get it!

This is such an addictive Easter dessert, and I haven’t yet met a single person who doesn’t love it (although I’m sure there’s someone out there somewhere).

The thing that makes it so addictive is the toffee base. Pair that with the crunch of the crackers and the white chocolate topping, and you’ve got a combination of sweet and salty that is just perfection!

White Chocolate Easter Crack Ingredients

Here’s what you need to make Easter toffee crack:

  • 8 Arnott’s Salada Originals (*see note below)
  • 2 x 170g blocks white chocolate
  • 125g butter, chopped
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • Cadbury mini eggs
  • Sprinkles & other decorations of your choice

What Is A Salada? As an Aussie, this recipe is typically made using Salada crackers. These are great because they are a crispbread cracker with a sprinkle of salt.

They come in a box of around 16 crackers, so you have enough to make 2 batches from a single box (or use the leftovers and slap on some Vegemite and butter for a truly Aussie snack)

If you don’t live in Australia or NZ, a popular alternative is Saltine Crackers.

How to Make Easter Egg Crack

Step 2: Make Your Toffee

Add your butter and brown sugar to a small saucepan over a medium heat. Stir and combine until the butter is melted and the mixture begins to boil. Allow it to thicken for around 30 seconds.

Step 3: Prepare The Base

Pour the toffee mixture over the Salada crackers, using the back of a spoon to spread the mixture across the entire surface. Place the tray into the pre-heated oven for 5 minutes.

Step 4: Add Toppings

Take your tray out of the oven and place your chocolate blocks on top. They should start to melt fairly quickly. Use the back of a spoon to spread the white chocolate across the entire surface of your crackers. While still melted, sprinkle mini eggs, sprinkles and any other decorations you want onto the chocolate. Place in the refrigerator to set.

Step 5: Crack It

Once fully set, remove from the refrigerator and break your Easter crack into smaller pieces, ready to eat! Use a knife if needed.

Recipe Substitutions

Here are some ingredient substitutions to try so you can adapt this recipe to suit the ingredients you have on hand or your preferences:

  • Salada Originals: Use other types of crackers such as Saltine crackers, soda crackers, water crackers or I’ve ever seen people make a crack variation using pretzels.
  • White Chocolate: If you aren’t so fond of white chocolate, you can use any other type of chocolate instead, such as dark, milk, caramel or flavoured chocolate. You can also use white chocolate melts instead of blocks.
  • Mini eggs: Swap out Cadbury Mini Eggs for M&Ms, other types of mini Easter eggs and candies.

How To Store Easter Crack

Easter crack can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for around 2 weeks. You can also freeze it for up to 2 months, in an airtight container or ziplock bags.

Tip: Make your Easter crack a couple of weeks before you need it so you can save time! I always do this for our Christmas crack, so it’s ready well before Christmas, and just pop it in the freezer!

Tips For Making Easter Crack Candy

Like any recipe, there are a few things you can do to make sure your Easter egg crack turns out great the first time.

  • Use a tray with edges, as the toffee will make a mess otherwise. You want to keep it contained!
  • Make sure to use proper baking parchment paper and not an alternative such as aluminium foil, otherwise, your toffee will likely stick to the paper (and this is not fun to remove).
  • Let it set fully before attempting to break apart your crack.
