How To Choose Cocktails For Your Christmas Party

If you’re serving more than about eight people, you cannot make drinks to order. You’ll spend the entire night behind the bench and see nobody.

For a crowd, pick one batch drink (a punch, a sangria or a jug of something) and put it out with a ladle. Then pick one simple pour for people who don’t want it. That’s the whole bar sorted, and both can be made before anyone arrives.

For six or fewer, you can make individual cocktails and it’s part of the fun.

Choose one drink that looks impressive, and make everything else easy. Guests remember the one good drink, not the effort behind the other four.

Rimming a glass with crushed candy cane or shredded coconut takes two minutes and makes a plain drink look considered.

Match the drink to the time of day.

Morning or brunch: something with juice or bubbles. Mimosas, spritzes, anything light.
Afternoon: the same, but colder and longer. Sangria, mules, spritzes.
After dinner: creamy or coffee-based. Espresso martinis, white Russians, anything with Baileys.

The most common mistake is serving a heavy cream-based cocktail at 2pm. Nobody wants a gingerbread white Russian in the afternoon.

One warm drink if it’s cold, none if it isn’t.

If you’re having a northern hemisphere Christmas, mulled wine or hot buttered rum makes the night. In Australia it’s a hard sell in 30 degrees, so I’d swap it for something frozen instead.

Always make one without alcohol.

There’ll be someone driving, pregnant, or just not drinking, and handing them a soft drink while everyone else gets a garnish is a bit rubbish.

Most of the cocktails below work without the spirit. The punches, the mules and anything cranberry-based lose almost nothing. Make a jug of the mocktail version alongside the real one and let people help themselves.

Buy more ice than you think. Everyone underestimates ice. Whatever you’ve bought, buy that again.
