5 Ways to Save Money Eating Out

We love eating out in our household. We don’t do it all the time, but probably at least once a fortnight. While there are plenty of perks, it can be expensive too, so how do you save money eating out?

It’s the appeal of a great tasting (hopefully) meal and no cleaning up afterwards that does it for us. And sometimes you just don’t want to cook! But I am always conscious of keeping costs down. Thankfully there are plenty of ways to save money eating out.

5 Ways to Save Money Eating Out

Many restaurants have a day a week that offers a free kids meal with every main meal purchased. This is a great way to save money eating out if you have kids because often that is one of the reasons many people don’t eat out often – kids can up the bill drastically. Take advantage of the kids eat free deals and you will easily save at least $10 per child.

To keep menus fresh and interesting, there is often a list of daily or weekly specials on display. This can often be cheaper than many of the menu items (not always). Alternatively, some restaurants offer a daily special each week such as roast of the day Sunday or cheap pizza Tuesday. Specials are a great way to save money eating out.

Eating out can often be a social affair to catch up with friends or family over a meal. We aren’t always overly hungry when eating with others, so if that happens to be the case, consider ordering an entree size meal instead of a full main. This can usually save around $5-10 per meal and you will neither end up over stuffed or wasting half your meal.

Seafood platter for 2 anyone? Okay, so that might work out more expensive but there are many meals you can order to share rather than buying separate meals. This works great for pizza or share platters. If you are in a larger group, you can also get a selection of dishes to share as well. Perfect option at an Asian cuisine restaurant as it allows you to sample multiple dishes while only forking out for one dish each and sides.

Some people really hate utilising discount coupons as they feel it makes them look ‘cheap’. I say embrace the savings. Discount coupons are the best way to save money eating out because you can often score discounts on your total bill, half price or even buy one get one free meals. This can result in $20 or more saving off your bill and that is money much better in your pocket to be spent on something else… like your next meal out.

I love looking for vouchers like Shop a Dockets and the kids eat free is definitely a winner.

Yeah, if we were in the USA, we would be great couponers... Well I would. Hubby gets annoyed. 'Stop giving me strange vouchers'. Haha

I'm a big fan of the discount coupon. The Entertainment Book is great value and I'm always on the lookout for deals on Groupon or Scoopon. If you like a tipple, BYO is definitely the way to go, but always check the corkage charges in advance, sometimes, they're so steep, it's not worth the hassle of bringing your own booze!

Great tips. Just renewed my entertainment book & love the other sites you mentioned too. Great for gifts too.

I love sharing meal like Italian and Asian options. It is the best and completely beats food envy too.

We are fans of the banquet style shared meal for big family get togethers. Chinese or Indian is perfect for this, or of course, pizza & pasta too.
