Over the past 2 years my life has changed drastically. Up until that time I was working full time in a professional career as a psychologist, and expected that career to be the one that I remained most passionate about no matter my life circumstances. Then the biggest change of all happened… motherhood.
It was as much a surprise to me as to everyone else that suddenly that working 8 til 4, five days a week did not really suit me. My priorities shifted big time. Suddenly it was far more important to me to be at home with my daughter and be the best mum I could be. My return to work date came quickly and instead of going back to my old role in the same old way, and putting my daughter into some form of daycare as I always imagined I would, that didn’t suit me anymore. I negotiated part time hours and earlier finish time. This worked well… for a while. But it also destroyed my career at that particular place.
All the while I was still enjoying all my creative pursuits of scrapbooking and project life, moving into more digital based creating and exploring my love of photography. What a dream it would be to turn those hobbies into an income…
Then of course came the choice to pursue a career change. Teaching suddenly felt right and so began uni study for the second time in my life. It sucked up most of my free time, but I was doing more than a full time workload. Uni holidays are currently a great relief. And with another change in circumstances on their way (shhh…. can’t reveal that one in detail now), the need for a different direction was more important than ever.
I’ve always been above average with spreadsheets, and used a few over the years to manage my own needs, like budgeting, wedding and party planning. I decided to turn a couple of these into templates that may benefit others and as a result my wedding planner spreadsheet has had a few sales on Etsy. My blog expense and profit tracker has not done so well, but I have a few more in the works and am always looking for feedback to improve these existing products.
I even created my own A4 project life templates, just by playing around in photoshop and learning along the way, thanks to the array of online tutorials to help along the way. I have sold one set. This item I thought would be a great idea as so often it is possible to get cheap deals on A4 size photobooks but project life templates are always 12×12 so it was created to fill that need, but I know the non-standard photo box sizes do not appeal to everyone.
What I would love to know is what I could create using my own current and developing skills that would fill a need for others to allow my digital creations to develop into an increasing passive income. Also how to market and promote these products to reach the right audiences as so far Pinterest, facebook, and blogging have only been so successful. I would love to branch out into digital scrapbooking supplies and other templates, with plans to turn my blog media kit into a customisable template for others. I would also like to expand on the digital invitation supplies I have created, by creating stationary options that appeal to lots of other people… instead of just getting a few Etsy likes here and there.
There is no doubt that digital items are in abundance online. Invitations especially are within a saturated market, so the key is learning what sells, why it sells and how can I create digital items that meet that need.
I still dream of that comfortable lifestyle and dream home, without sacrificing my intention to be present in my children’s lives. Learning how to put my skills to good use helps towards those dreams.
Earlier this year I watched April Bowles-Olin on Creative Live, with her course on successful blogging. It was amazing and I learnt so much. I will admit there are a lot of things I am yet to apply but I still have all my notes ready to go when I get more time up my sleeve. I am very excited that she is returning to Creative live with 2 new courses that I hope will benefit me in my goals. I will be watching. Will you?
