The walls in your home are the ultimate canvas for adding your personality and style. Blank walls can look modern and sleek, but if decorated right, they can look downright amazing!
It took us a couple of years in our home before we added any frames or decor to our walls. Thinking back, that’s kind of crazy. There were a couple of existing hooks on the wall where we added frames, but otherwise all those perfect blank white walls were left neglected and bare for far too long.
But faced with a undecorated wall space can be overwhelming! Where do you start? So many possibilities!
1 – Photo Frames
Photo frames are the first thing that come to mind for most people when planning to start decorating your walls. They come in every possible size and combination, colour and style. Plus they are rather inexpensive usually too, making them an easy way to add some interest to your walls… and display some of your favourite photographs.
Personally I am a big fan of multi photo frames so I can display multiple photographs at once without having to hang several frames at once. You can theme them around a certain time or event, or have a mix of photos from different occasions.
2 – Photo Gallery Wall
If you want to step it up to the next level, you could put together a whole wall of photo frames and images to create your own gallery wall. These can look amazing and are a lot of fun to plan too. Pinterest has some fantastic ideas for gallery wall inspiration and how to organise your frames. Usually they consist of frames of various sizes and shapes, or you could use the same size for each frame for a very structured look. Both look great and add a real talking point to your home.
Canvas prints are a fantastic alternative to photo frames. One of the best things about them is the fact the canvas is stretched over the sizes of the wooden frame, so your print goes right to the edges, adding an almost 3D appearance to your images. Plus as an added bonus, they are lightweight and usually really easy to hang.
As there is no frame around the edges of the print, canvases are great for multi photo displays too. You can get a little creative and split one image across several canvases, or create a canvas based gallery wall too.

4 – Wall Prints
Wall decor isn’t all about photographs! Wall prints are a great way to add colour and style to your home. You can find original wall prints in a lot of markets or galleries, but if you’re looking for something budget friendly, a mass produced wall print is a great alternative and can be purchased almost anywhere.
You can hang a wall print much the same way you do your photo frames or canvases, making them a simple option for wall decorating ideas in your home.
5 – Wall Paper
I remember when I was a kid, wallpaper was still the done thing. Every room in the house was adorned with wallpaper and some of it was pretty ugly. It was also a pain in the ass to put up. A bit like contacting school books, but less bubbly! And removing it wasn’t much better! My childhood bedroom had pink and white stripes and flowers. Pretty, but not so great when I was a teenager and still had little girl walls. So we stripped it off and painted it blue, adding a funky wallpaper border around the centre.
These days wallpaper is not so popular, but it actually can be trendy! It can be a fun way to add interest to a wall and relatively inexpensive too. You could cover the whole room, or just a single feature wall. Or even add a border like we have in our youngest daughter’s room. We didn’t actually decorate this room. It was like this when we moved in but we loved it anyway.
6 – Feature Wall
Following on from the wall paper idea, a feature wall can be the perfect way to mix up your home. It can be as simple as painting one wall in a room a different colour from the rest, making it inexpensive and simple to execute.
A feature wall also looks great paired with any of the other wall decoration ideas too. Combine them and let your creativity shine through!
7 – Wall Stickers & Decals
If you’re not a fan of marking your walls with hooks and nails, or taking the drastic route of painting your walls, wall stickers and decals are a great alternatively to decorating your home. This is also a perfect option if you are renting your home and don’t want to leave any marks when you leave.
Wall stickers are an adhesive vinyl that adheres to the wall but easily peels away when you’re ready to take it down. They come in so many shapes and designs and are usually quite inexpensive too.
When we moved into our home with our daughter’s blue nursery, deciding not to repaint it, we simply decided to find a way to make it more feminine when we found out we were having a girl. A couple of feminine wall decals, paired with a beautiful mirror and dark wood furnishings, and splashes of pink were our way around and I could not have loved the room more!
